Dr. Scott Leavengood and several colleagues in the College of Forestry are participating in a 5-year, $40 million, USDA NIFA funded, research and outreach project. The Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance (NARA) project is focused on developing a biofuels industry in the northwest with a specific emphasis on the use of biomass for jet fuel.
Dr. Fred Kamke has partnered with Corvallis Tool Company (CTC) to develop machinery to produce densified wood known as 'VTC Wood' (viscoelastic thermal compressed wood).
Bike helmets from renewable materials - Milo Clauson, John Nairn, and Scott Leavengood assisted Corvallis entrepreneur Dan Coyle make his vision a reality. The wood and cork helmets stole the show at the recent PDX Bicycle Show. See Bikeportland.org article for the details.
Wood-Based Composite Science Short Course
OSU Professional and Noncredit Education (PNE) recently finished work on the Oregon Wood Innovation Center's Wood Shrink/Swell Estimator mobile site. They took the original online application's interface and optimized it for mobile phones and tablets, enhancing this tool's ease of use in the field by sales and customer service representatives in the wood product industry.
Graduate student Mike Burnard recently completed his M.S. project examining factors related to surface cracking ('checking') in maple plywood used for cabinets and furniture.
