  1. Site preparation includes ripping, disking, plowing, cultipacking 2 ways, floating 2x, and corrugating 2 ways using 1997 custom rates for Malheur County, Oregon.
  2. Cuttings - 220 sticks per acre planted on 14 ft. by 12 ft. spacings at $.18 per stick.
  3. Cuttings are planted in the Spring beginning in April.
  4. Weed control chemically using Treflan at label rate and Goal at label rate, plus application. Spot spraying may be needed later in the year as the Goal life-expectancy diminishes. Use of a cover crop may result in different expenses due to establishment of the crop and several mowings.
  5. Pest control as needed. Sevin and Ambush are used for most insects. Gopher control may be needed.
  6. Poplar trees need 200 units of Nitrogen per year (probably won't need to apply any N). Micronutrients could be a problem in some soils - Zinc, Boron, and Sulfur may need to be applied after soil and leaf samples are analyzed.
  7. Pruning is done when the trees are dormant. The lower third of the crown is removed at the end of the third and fourth years.
  8. **Water costs are based on 20 irrigations/year @$3.00 per irrigation. The cost of pumping water ranges from $20 to $90 per acre. Water assessment averages $30/acre ft. Twenty-four to 48 inches per year is recommended rate depending on your irrigation system. You need to add cost of labor according to your irrigation system and the cost of your system.
  9. Land is valued @$2500/acre. It is assumed the owner has 50% equity. Equity is charged @ 5% on a non-cash basis and the mortgage is charged as a cash cost @ 8% plus $25/acre property taxes.
  10. Management costs are estimated @ 4% of all costs.
  11. General overhead includes pickup, accounting fees, office, shop, insurance, and other miscellaneous items estimated at 5% of all cash costs, excluding general overhead.
  12. *Harvest costs are not included because they are assumed to be the responsibility of the wood purchaser.
  13. Wood stumpage values at age 10 = 25,000 board feet/acre @ $35/ thousand board feet ($8750) + 30 bone dry units (BDU) of chips @ $50/BDU ($1500) = $10,250/acre
