Small-Scale Sawing & Drying Workshop

The purpose of this one-day program is to:

  • introduce participants to techniques appropriate for small-scale operators to improve their ability to saw and dry quality lumber;
  • see small-scale sawing & drying equipment in operation; and
  • network and share information with others with similar interests.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

Morning Session (8 AM - Noon) : Classroom-based presentations will emphasize:

  1. Sawing: Basic wood technology (how trees grow, heartwood/ sapwood, juvenile wood, etc.) and the impact on the lumber you saw; techniques for sawing for value vs. volume; lumber grading & measurement; and an overview of different types of mills.
  2. Drying: Understanding the importance of drying lumber; how to properly prepare green lumber for drying; how to avoid common drying defects; and small-scale drying technology such as solar kilns and dehumidification kilns.

Afternoon Session (1 PM - 4 PM): Following lunch (provided), we will travel to a field site to see various types of small-scale sawing and drying technology first-hand.

Presenters:

Program presenters are Scott Leavengood and Dr. Jim Reeb with Oregon State University's Wood Products Extension Program. Scott is the director of the Oregon Wood Innovation Center at OSU and Jim is in the department of Wood Science & Engineering and provides technical assistance to wood products firms throughout Oregon.
